Residential Wall Construction

The 2×4 and 2×6 methods of wall construction are common types of residential wall construction. Their popularity is due to their suitability for different areas and they are fairly cheaper than other wall construction methods. In certain regions where the 2×4 may not be sufficient to allow for insulation, it is replaced by the 2×6. The 2×6 wall is wider than the 2×4 by two inches.

Apart from being cost effective to build, other benefits of the 2×4 and 2×6 include their versatility in creating aesthetic patterns.

Insulated Concrete Forms

Another type of residential wall construction is the insulated concrete forms (ICF). The ICF is much stronger and durable than both the 2×4 and 2×6 and hence may be desired by households in disaster prone areas. Such areas include hurricane prone areas, frequently flooded areas and areas that experience extreme wind speeds.

The ICF customizable according to the household’s desire or wants. This makes it at par with the 2×4 and 2×6 wall construction methods in regard to aesthetic design. It is however ranked higher than both the 2×4 and 2×6 due to its strength. Other benefits of ICF include its versatility and durability than both the 2×4 and 2×6 methods. The ICF walls are also energy efficient. They store warmth in them and keep buildings warm throughout the year. The ICF walls are also helpful in keeping compounds quiet and cleans the air. They can be used in any type of home construction.

Steel Walls

These walls are extremely strong since they are made from steel. Steel is usually used by people who require that extra protection or people in adverse weather conditions areas including hurricane prone areas. Steel gives the strongest and safest protection against natural and human intrusions or disturbances.

Steel is more expensive than other types of wall constructions. However, its expensive price is justified by its benefits, including stability since it is not prone to rust and durability since it is not affected by weather or termites. In addition, the material is also very strong while, at the same time ,maintaining a fairly low weight. Steel is also resistant to fires and can keep the house safe from strong winds or floods.

All in all, the wall construction method that is right for you depends on one’s budget and the geographic region where the home will be built. The appropriate security required should also be considered. When choosing a wall construction method, your builder should have the knowledge of your house plan, region and the pros and cons of using each wall construction method.
